Joe Massad: The Man through the Eyes of his Peers Laura Bruck

Accessing professional credentials is, today, as easy as a click of the mouse. An online search for “Joseph Massad, DDS” will put at your fingertips a lengthy list of titles, affiliations, faculty and professional society positions, honors and awards. You’ll undoubtedly find his name beside the likes of prosthodontics masters Shipmon, Frush and Rudd, and will likely see this general dentist referred to as an internationally renowned expert in the field of removable prosthodontics, the key opinion leader in the area of complete dentures and a tireless advocate for his patients and his profession.
There is, however, only so much to be gleaned from lists of credentials and accomplishments—no matter how lengthy or impressive. As a writer and reporter accustomed to “digging deep,” I turned to the colleagues and associates of this man I had not yet met, hoping to scratch below the surface. Not surprisingly, it was the words of his peers that truly conveyed the essence of Joe Massad—words such as “visionary,” “innovator,” “world-class educator,” “skilled clinician” and “cherished friend.”
Master Communicator, Lifelong Educator
Talk to the colleagues of Joe Massad and a common thread will soon emerge; namely, that of Dr. Massad the prolific lecturer and passionate teacher, whose hands-on courses and standing-room- only lectures are legendary throughout the profession.
First and foremost, I think of Joe as a master communicator and top-shelf educator who is far less interested in a fee than in giving course attendees the best experience possible. When Joe is on the agenda the room is always filled to capacity. He’s truly a special person to me. Aloysius Kleszynski, DDS

If you’re feeling tired and overwhelmed, picture Joe Massad lecturing in the Middle East, Europe and Chicago, and arriving at his office on time to see the next morning’s patients. Joe’s rare passion for dentistry extends to his patients, colleagues and those who come to learn from him— all of whom he treats with the utmost respect. Joe is one of the smartest people I’ve ever known, and never misses an opportunity to strike up a relationship that will further our profession. Mostafa El-Sherif, DMD,MScD,PhD

Joe is one of the most honest, respected and well-known clinicians in the field of removable prosthodontics. It’s because of his practical “real world” presentations that dentists return to his courses time after time, knowing that he wants them to succeed in this difficult and neglected area of dentistry. Following Joe’s recommendations ensures that success.
Gordon J. Christensen, DDS, MSD, PhD Provo, Utah
Joe and I became fast friends over our mutual interest in continuing education and our shared love for the profession and for teaching and helping colleagues. Joe "gives it his all" in his presentations. He makes the material easy to understand and is always willing to answer any and all questions. Joe is a true educator who genuinely cares about his colleagues and patients. I’m honored to know him and consider him a friend.
Howard S. Glazer, DDS, FAGD Fort Lee, NJJoe Massad’s presentations are second to none. What others take entire books to explain, Joe conveys with clarity, simplicity and unsurpassed creativity. David L. Hoexter, DMD New York, NY
Years after first meeting Joe in Scottsdale for the opening of a new teaching clinic, a dermatologist scheduled to speak at an International Academy of Dental and Facial Esthetics fell ill, leaving a hole in the program. With no preparation (and no notes), Joe stepped on stage and mesmerized the audience, getting the meeting off to a stellar start. Irwin Smigel, DDS New York, NY
Dr. Massad and his team deliver the best educational programs we’ve seen. He has had a significant impact on our business as a clinician, educator and innovator. Edward A. Santucci, Clinical Director, DENTSPLY/Caulk Milford, DE
Joe has lectured for us regularly since presenting with Drs. Rudd and Shipmon at a CE course at the University of Texas in 1994. We do 265 courses each year and I put him at top of the list of presenters. Rather than dusting off the same old lectures, Joe always gives attendees the individualized instruction they need, and masterfully uses audio/visual technology to enhance his presentations.
William O. Butler, MS San Antonio, TX
When you read an article or attend a presentation given by Joe Massad, you know you can rely on its content and veracity. George Freedman, DDS Toronto, Ontario, Canada
It’s been 15 years since I met Dr. Massad at a Pankey course. Our lab was looking for a way to take our denture department to the next level and Dr. Massad took an interest. Today, our staff knows they’re in for an awesome learning experience when Joe comes to visit. Ken Waldo, CDT, Lords Dental
Green Bay, WI
I first met Joe Massad after asking him to present for an American Prosthodontics Society meeting a number of years ago. He is well respected by his colleagues and his expertise in the field of complete dentures has, for decades, provided his course attendees with sound and practical information.
Charles Goodacre, DDS, MS Loma Linda, CA
Joe Massad is widely respected as a clinician and presenter, but also as a hands-on educator—and master of all things audio/visual. He is truly one of our profession’s elite. Stanley F. Malamed, DDS Los Angeles, CA
Joe and I were presenters at the International Symposium on the Treatment of Edentulous People in Lebanon when we met in Beirut in 1998. It was the first time I’d seen a presenter use video clips to complement his lecture. Tony Daher, DDS
LaVerne, CA
It was Dr. Irwin Becker at the Pankey Institute who advised me to take my first course with Joe, calling him the best denture instructor in the country. One course led to another and, today, we collaborate closely on teaching and research projects. Dr. Massad is arguably the world’s finest teacher in the removable prosthetics field. He travels the world, teaches at the most highly acclaimed facilities, and is consistently called upon to treat VIPs. First and foremost, Joe is my mentor and my friend. He’ a man of great character and faith, and is respected by the entire dental profession.
Joseph P. Thornton, DDS Snellville, GA
I’ve known of Dr. Joe Massad since I moved to San Antonio and started giving and taking postgraduate courses in prosthodontics, so it was inevitable that our paths would cross. Joe started giving courses in his office and limiting the number of students to one or two. In this manner he could teach on a personal level and cover more of the basic prosthodontics. Kenneth D. Rudd, DDS
San Antonio, TX
Man of Initiative and Innovation
Joe Massad’s capacity to build on and optimize the concepts and techniques of the masters is well known to his colleagues, who marvel at his seemingly innate ability to “take a concept and run with it.” The beneficiaries of this unique gift, say his peers, are his colleagues and the patients they treat, as well as the profession as a whole.
Joe Massad intrigues everyone he meets with a unique blend of knowledge and personality that inspires them to learn and get involved. We were both young men when, nearly 3 decades ago, I was working as Dr. Frush’s private technician and Joe came to learn all he could about Frush prosthetics. He used that knowledge to take the technology to a higher level, becoming a true pioneer in esthetic dentistry.
Jack Danilov, CDT, Danilov Dental Lab Sacramento, CA
It’s been 5 years since I sought out Dr. Massad’s expertise on behalf of DENTSPLY/Caulk. That encounter evolved into a collaboration that ultimately brought to market a procedural kit that included our impression materials and a novel impression tray designed and produced by Dr. Massad.
Edward A. Santucci
A colleague and I introduced the neutral zone concept in the 1980s. True to form, Joe took the concept and ran with it, not only building upon the principle but also turning a standard slide show into a top-notch animated presentation. Frank J. Schiesser, DDS
Joe and I ran into each other repeatedly on the lecture circuit until we finally connected about 15 years ago. I consider him the world’s leading expert on removable prosthodontics—not just because of his extraordinary knowledge but also because of the innovative tools he has developed.
George Freedman, DDS
I met Joe Massad more than 30 years ago when our lab was working with Thomas Shipmon, Sr. on his metal-based denture technique. Dr. Massad went on to make a series of improvements that made the denture considerably easier to adjust and reline. I’ve never known anyone like Joe. He’s always thinking about how to improve the field with techniques that make outcomes more predictable.
Ron Johnston, CDT, Stern Empire Houston, TX
After meeting on the CE circuit nearly 10 years ago, Dr. Massad approached me about doing a lecture, and then a video, on medical emergencies and anesthesia in dentistry. It’s no surprise that it was Joe who got a sponsor for the video, and later convinced a publisher to go with our text on local anesthetic technique. Joe is a man of principle who does nothing unless it’s in keeping with his high standards. Stanley F. Malamed, DDS
When our paths finally crossed about 15 years ago, I quickly realized that Joe Massad’s reputation as an innovator in removable prosthetics is well deserved. Joe used our mutual interest in implants over dentures as a springboard, leading to the development of a now-patented product to record bite more accurately and simply than ever before. That’s typical of Joe. He has consistently led the profession when it comes to providing the means to do better for our patients, and his authenticity and integrity are evidenced by his commitment to teaching only about products and procedures that he has vetted in his own practice. Samuel M. Strong, DDS Little Rock, AR
A Lasting Legacy
In what he describes as “the most frightening talk I’ve ever given,” Dr. Massad (accepting an invitation from prosthodontics master Kenneth Rudd) presented his concepts before the original authors of the texts widely considered the prosthodontics “bibles” of their day. “It was 1995 and my concepts deviated from the standardized teachings,” he says. “But this is what gave me the fortitude to move forward and develop the methods that, today, have removed the political division between authors and have brought together a combination of now-proven concepts that have become the new standard.”
That fortitude and passion as an advocate for his field is not lost on Joe Massad’s colleagues, who describe his contribution as extraordinary, and his unyielding commitment to sharing what he has learned as a model for all in the profession.
No one understands dentures the way Joe does. Not only has he changed the way people think about dentures, and especially dentures over implants, but he has literally revolutionized the entire profession. His thoroughness and accuracy are unsurpassed, and his willingness to go out of his way to advise or help anyone in need is one of the many reasons I’m proud to call him my friend.
Irwin Smigel, DDS
Joe Massad is one of the most innovative, out-of-the box thinkers I know. Starting in dental school (where we met in 1971) and continuing for the next 40 years, he has made it his mission to study with all 16 of the "masters" in removable prosthodontics, and to use that knowledge to create teachable techniques. The improvements he has pioneered have enabled general dentists of all skill levels to achieve predictable prosthodontic outcomes. Richard P June, DDS Peoria, IL
Joe Massad has done more to elevate the quality of removable prosthodontics than anyone I know. It’s not about ego with Joe; he’s extremely generous with his time and is always willing to help others develop professionally, and to share all he knows about how to improve patient care. Lily T. Garcia, DDS, MS San Antonio, TX
Joe quickly became one of my all-time favorites after we met through the Chicago Dental Society. Some use the word “magic” to describe Joe’s skills and talents; his prosthodontic work is phenomenal and his implant work is picture perfect. Aloysius Kleszynski, DDS
I’ve worked on the manufacturing end of the prosthetic dentistry field for 17 years, have known Dr. Massad for 15, and know of no other clinician in the world who’s more devoted to teaching and to delivering excellent prosthetic outcomes. Dr. Massad is a remarkable advocate for his field, which is one of the most misunderstood in all of dentistry. His easy-to-learn systems provide others with the tools needed to achieve mastery, and his feedback on our company’s products and materials has been invaluable.
Devon O. Howe, President and CEO, Nobilium / Ticonium Albany, NY
Joe Massad’s contributions to an often overlooked area of dentistry have breathed new life into the “lost art” of removable prosthodontics. He has a talent for taking the best work of each of the leaders in the field and developing a system that will be reproducible for those he teaches. Since first hearing him speak at Tufts a decade ago, I’ve been honored to serve on Joe’s team as he presents across the country. It’s a privilege to work with this uniquely open and sharing man, and to witness his passion for doing what’s right for his own patients and those of his colleagues. William Lobel, DMD Saugus, MA
Man of Integrity
His reputation as a world-class teacher, clinician and innovator notwithstanding, it is Joe Massad’s compassion and integrity that his peers seem most eager to convey.
Joe’s knowledge is surpassed only by his commitment to his patients; he truly listens to them and never fails to come up with techniques and products that give them exactly what they’re looking for in a prosthetic—knowledge that he happily shares for the good of his colleagues’ patients as well.
Ken Waldo, CDT
Perhaps most important is the way Joe has advanced the profession by leveraging his wisdom and expertise for the betterment of patient care. I’m truly honored by my association with Dr. Massad, and I’m confident that his drive, commitment and professionalism will continue to help our profession flourish.
Edward A. Santucci
To say that Joe is widely recognized and respected by his peers is an understatement. Joe is well known for his ethical treatment of patients, and for his willingness to share everything he knows with his colleagues. George Freedman, DDS

Joe always shares everything he learns and never fails to give credit to those with whom he collaborates. Joe Massad is the consummate professional; he knows his stuff and is determined to deliver the best possible product in order to restore each patient’s esthetics, function and dignity. Jack Danilov
Most impressive is what Dr. Massad gives to patients whom others in the field have written off as “hopeless cases.” Just when you think he’s done all he can, Joe comes up with something new. There’s no doubt that he’s made his mark as a leader in the industry, a hands-on educator and a compassionate practitioner.
Ron Johnston, CDT,
It seems fitting that this man—whose life is grounded in his deep Christian faith and in living by the “golden rule”—would so passionately advocate for the respectful treatment of the edentulous patient, and for functional and esthetic dentures that restore self-esteem and self-worth. As the most senior member of the “Massad team,” I consider Joe to be one of my dearest friends. His dedication to our profession is surpassed only by his devotion to his wife Darlene, their five children and their families.
Richard P June, DDS
Joe’s extraordinary kindness and compassion have improved the lives of millions—and all without sacrificing a moment with his cherished family. Mostafa El-Sherif, DMD,MScD,PhD
Joe can do it all; he’s one of the few people who can truly be called a master—not just because of what he’s contributed but also because of the way he lives. Looking into Joe’s eyes will tell you what’s in his heart. He’s a gifted and humble man who enthusiastically acknowledges those who have helped him along the way.
Frank J. Schiesser, DDS
Joe and I were presenting in adjacent rooms at a California Dental Association meeting and somehow found a way to sneak away to hear snippets of each other’s lectures. That passion for learning and sharing is typical of Joe, who is a respected colleague and friend. But perhaps most impressive is the way he includes others in his pursuit of knowledge and excellence, inspiring all who meet him to raise the bar and do what’s best for our patients and the profession as members of the “Massad family of colleagues.” Joe, I’m wearing my cufflinks in your honor!”
David L. Hoexter, DMD
As a member of the “Massad educational team,” I know Joe to be a leader in his field. His actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. Joe Massad is a colleague, an inspiring friend, an educator, a role model and a man of vision. Tony Daher, DDS
